Maple Valley Food Bank and Emergency Services addresses the most basic needs of food and shelter. In 2008-2009 we helped in the following ways:
- Food was provided weekly to households who found themselves in need
- 1,828 unduplicated families were served
- 6,090 unduplicated children, adults, and seniors in those households made 48,029 visits
- 50% of those we served were children and seniors
- Each week we saw an average of 300 households
- 1,024,095 lbs of food was distributed
- $145,518 was spent to provide help with utility disconnects, eviction notices, move-in costs, prescription drugs, medical bills, gas vouchers, food, holiday programs and other emergency needs
- Financial emergency services provided to 2,369 individuals / 670 local families
The long-term goals of our agency are to increase client ability to meet other financial obligations, significantly reduce the likelihood of homelessness, and help families stay together through difficult times, improve nutrition and reduce hunger.
Maple Valley Food Bank and Emergency Services (originally incorporated as the Tahoma Coordinating Council) has been a United Way agency for over 60 years. In the agency's early years, the food bank operated out of a variety of different locations ranging from homes to churches.
In 1985, the food bank moved to the newly built Maple Valley Community Center. In 1992, due to program expansion of the community center, we moved to a new location. At that time we purchased the historic Maple Valley Community Club. Built in 1933, this building is the oldest community structure in Maple Valley.
In 2005, with the help of a King County Block Grant and grants from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Boeing Community Fund, Seattle Foundation, PACCAR Foundation, Medina Foundation, the city of Maple Valley, Maple Valley Rotary and Rotary District 5030, as well as numerous donations from local residents, we built a new food bank warehouse and office adjoining our existing building. This expansion added an additional 3,300 square feet for food banking and emergency services programs.
Our agency is well established within the community. We have local support from churches, businesses, schools and individuals, as well as from the cities of Maple Valley and Covington. In addition to United Way, we receive funding from King County, EFSP, EFAP and ESAP.
